It's called a CAST RECORDING.

And it's a REVUE, NOT a REVIEW.

Jersey Boys is a Jukebox musical, and though some people may take that to mean that as a derogatory definision, I mean it by it's action meaning: A show that takes a catalog of songs by an artist to use as the main body of songs instead of original songs written for the show.

MsDivaKate wrote:
While in the technical sense of the definition it could be considered jukebox...because of the way it is set up and because of the story its telling and the book, it's so much more.... I don't think it would be possible to do a show telling the Four Season's story and not using their music/inserting original songs. It wouldn't work.

Whether or not it would be difficult or even impossible to tell the story of the Four Seasons without using their catalogue of songs, the show is, by definition, a jukebox musical. Yes, it falls into a specific sub-category in that it is autobiographical - like Buddy. But, in the broadest sense, as kathennessey says, the show tells a story using already existing songs.

kathennessey wrote:
In a similar catagory is the show Crazy for You, which compiles songs that were written by the Gershwin brothers and that were hits of their era, played on the radio. Even the show Side by Side Sondheim or other musical revues could fall in this category....

MsDivaKate wrote:
Side By Side Sondheim is a (revue). Crazy For You falls somewhere in between. Because it does take songs from earlier musicals, yet actually tells a story, different from many revues.

Crazy For You does fall somewhere in between, but not between a revue and a jukebox musical as you imply. As a revised and reworked version of Girl Crazy, it falls in between "revisal/revival" and jukebox musical.

Later days
