That's probabaly wh Maguire never explcitly stated in anyw ay that Fiyero was the Scarecrow. It was probably invented for the musical to integrate a happy ending. Although that hasn't stopped book fans from analyzing the novel scenario as such. It's possible that Fiyero could have been the scarecrow if his memory/mind was somehow wiped during his transformation...although it's made fairly certain that he was probably beaten to death by the Oz guards after Elphaba tried to kill Morrible...

Wicked the novel actually doesn't do too bad a job of falling into line with the Wizard of Oz (movie. I haven't read the book for a few years and can't remember specific lines and plot movements so I can't say for sure about that). Wizard the musical is, in my opinion, terrible at covering plots and should be taken with a pinch of salt if at all.

if u read the second gregory maguire novel, 'Son of a Witch', it has Lir observing that the Scarecrow that replaces the wizard isn't the one that he travelled back to the emerald city after Elphaba was melted (in the book) meaning not the scarecrow that, in the musical, would have been fiyero. not sure if that helps at all, but it makes sense to me

 WICKED Plot Hole The only explanation that has any relevance here is that Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman have no idea how this kind of intertextuality works. The meaning of Wicked, although based directly on the novel by Gregory Maguire, is shaped by an intertextual network consisting of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (the Frank L. Baum novel) and The Wizard of Oz (the film adaptation). While both the Maguire novel and the stage musical offer a revisionist history of the events, the skill of creating such a revisionist history lies in taking the given circumstances and events provided in the original text (texts, here, as both new works attempt to knit together some the inconsistencies between the original novel and its film adaptation) and constructing a narrative that deconstructs those circumstances and events without contradicting them. The choice to transform Fiyero into the Scarecrow in the musical is a poor one: besides being one of the more misguided departures from the Maguire novel, the contrivance of the transformation does not line up with either the Baum novel or its film adaptation. It is a choice made solely to manipulate the audience's emotions and one that contributes, so many other elements of the musical, to the destruction of any potential credibility and true emotional resonance that Wicked might have had.

Re: Just read that, and I completely agree with you. The sequel was great, by the way. I also started the final book in the series, since I got it for Christmas along with Son of a Witch

Re: Plot Hole (WARNING: SPOILERS!!!!!) I think we're all forgetting the biggest plot hole about Wicked --- Dorothy is a naive orphaned child from Nowhere, Kansas and therefore could not have come up with such a flawless story.
