It's only the best book about the creation of a musical ever written. Ted Chapin worked on the original production of Follies as a gopher and kept a journal about how the piece was created. This is the book he wrote that is based on that experience. It's wonderful. And, of course, Eric, I'm not expecting it to be as good or as extensive. I was just comparing the experience of reading the book with the exciting feeling I have about seeing Every Little Step.

EVerything Was Possible indeed is bar none the best book written on a single musical, ever.

I saw Every Little Step in it's limited local release a few months back. While good, and interesting, it was not something that I would be excited to see again. I really love A Chorus Line, and I was intrigued by the archive footage and the look at the casting process for the revival, but on the whole, I thought ELS was not a memorable record of a noteworthy milestone in musical theatre. It lacked SOMETHING. Watching Charlotte D'Amboise was thoroughly enjoyable, along with some of the other immensely talented young actors.

My brother has that book. The cover was immediately recognizable as I remember seeing it in his room when I was a kid.

I've yet to discover Follies. My brother would always rave about it and encourage me to give it a shot. That and Company are the only two Sondheim shows I've never gotten around to listening to. I keep meaning to but, yeah, it's long overdue!

I know "Ladies Who Lunch," "Another Hundred People," "I'm Still Here," and "Losing My Mind," but then again most everyone does. :S

Edit: Heh, guess it just looks similar to a book my bro had. This was published 2005 so it can't be this one. I know for a fact he had a book with the Follies logo on it though.

oh dear! HAHA first I was gonna ask just how old you were.

But knowing you're a big Chorus Line fan you really need to know Company and Follies, particularly the original productions that Michael Bennett learned so many of his Chorus Line techniques on.

Every Little Step was nominated as Best Documentary at the Golden Satellite Awards and now has gone on to win the award! Very cool stuff, indeed.

There's also a rave review of the film by Steve Suskin. An extract:

Every Little Step fascinates on many levels. To begin with, it is as accurate a view of the Broadway audition process as you're likely to see. A Chorus Line itself is a theatricalization of the process, but carefully sculpted by a master showman and his writing staff. Here the central characters are Bob Avian, Bennett's longtime artistic partner, co-choreographer of the original Chorus Line, and director of the revival; Jay Binder, a veteran New York casting director who specializes in musicals; and Baayork Lee, one of the original cast members whose autobiographical tale was lifted off the tape and who has been restaging Bennett's choreography for years now. These are not actors performing scripted roles, but behind-the-scenes workers caught by omnipresent cameras.

I really liked Every Little Step. I thought it was really interesting to see the things they were looking for in the actors. A good insight into the world of auditions, and what better show to make the documentary about! I really loved the guy who was chosen to play Paul. And Tyce, wow I'll be thinking of this next time he's on So You Think You Can Dance.

What's funny was that all 3 of the Mike's at callbacks where fantastic, and they could have picked any one of them...Tyce's true colors came out in the end when he basically said that this was nothing for him and he is already doing better things. What a douche! He wanted that part otherwise he wouldn't of tried out! I was shocked he forgot the routine and improved a little, as he was the best dancer up there.

I actually watched it in musical theatre class. i found it really interesting to see the audition process up close.

Yeah, but they must have thought his ego would be too hard to work with. His pirouettes are brilliant though!

Post EVERY LITTLE STEP
I watched Every Little Step for the fourth time this past weekend. It is such a valuable little film, particularly for the way in which it documents the audition process. The three things that get me every time are when Jessica Lee Goldyn talks about her ambition and what she thinks about having something on which to fall back, when Jason Tam delivers the Paul monologue and when the casting director talks about what they are looking for in the final callbacks. I have to order myself a copy of this DVD already!
