Okay, I know this is old, but I want to know: how do you sing and drink at the same time? I'm not trying to make you sound ridiculous or anything, but I really want to know. Could you explain exactly what happens? Because right now it doesn't make sense to me . . .

I'm pretty sure it's a recorded voice...

She's not really drinking. It's most definitely a trick glass. Very few shows have people actually drinking.

Unfortunately, I was in a show once with a little kid that didn't know that. He filled his prop coffee cup when I thought it was empty, then performed the handoff without telling me. Since he had found the cup laying around in the wings, I didn't put my mouth to it and ended up with water all down my front. Thank god it was at a rehearsal.

I saw the show at the Ahmanson (pre-Broadway) and it I'm 99% sure it was recorded. That certainly doesn't make it any less funny!

Ah, just to clear things up: I'm also about 99% sure that it's recorded when Sutton sings it, but that person was claiming that it was possible to drink and sing at the same time, and I wanted to know how that's possible. But thanks for trying to clear it up for me, anyway. :)

I'm sure for live shows, with untrained ventriolquists, they use a tape.
However, the trained ventriolquists can actually do it, they use it to "proove" that its actually the dummy talking and not them.

They learn to swallow with the lower part (or upper part, I forget) of their throat, and with the other part they do the talking. Also, they hold liquid in their throat, and swallow much of it when they break.

I've done it on awkward vowel and gutteral noises..

just basically pouring the water into your mouth.. and not swallowing.. until after you finish.

granted... that won't get you more than maybe a 10 second UUUUHHHHGGGHGHHGHGHGHGHGH.. but it still amused me....

hahah.

Actually, the " I dont wanna show off" before the last note ( there are two of them, i am talking abou the second) is prerecorded. this allows her to get her breathe for the last note whils miming. I was quite lucky tohave a chane to look at the score and came across quite a few " pre recorded" and then LIVE notes. For example, only the last page of the Overture is live.

For the tour that closed that opened in January of 2009 the part while drinking the water is pre-recorded... I was there when they teched the show, I ran stage crew for that show for a week... They used the "I don't wanna show off" as a sound check to make sure it was working... It is prerecorded to give her the time to take the breath for the end.
