I think Elaine Paige played and sang this role the best. They shouldve made a cast recording of her in this role. I know on her Encore album she sings a few songs from the show

Elaine Paige has never been the best at anything. It amazes me shei s even famous. her voice is grating and she is a pretty terrible actress. every role she played someone else played a who lot better.

I voted for Diahann Carroll. Although some of her songs were transposed down, she delivered an amazing performance in terms of both singing and acting that no other Norma I've seen/heard has matched. I also really liked Faith Brown (yay, somebody else knows she played the role!), Glenn Close, Betty Buckley, and I even liked Petula Clark to an extent (she was better in the 2004 concert than in the US Tour). Wasn't so fond of Patti or Elaine Paige, and for much the same reason -- they both seemed to play exaggerated versions of themselves rather than the character.

LOL.

Except most Cats fans feel she was the best original Grizabella. Betty Buckley and Laurie Beechman were both far superior in my opinion. But I am in the minority.

Of the few I've heard, I'd have to vote for Helen Schnider. Brilliant and frightening in her final breakdown.

I wish I could find more of Debbie Byrne, but then she wasn't so much acting as having a real breakdown...

Paige is far from the best Grizabella, but Buckly was worse.

I voted "other", cause - for me - NOBODY can beaut Helen Schneider in that part! She's simply perfect!

No, you're insane. Her portrayal is the most dynamic and complex I've ever seen.

Okay, back on topic... :P
