Post Mrs. Harcourt
My director told us to come up with an objective and background for our charcter. I'm finding this a little difficult because I'm not so sure what to think of Mrs. Harcourt. I know she's snobby, overbearing, and strict, but I also feel like there's a side of her that is only that way because she's looking out for Hope. I'm not sure what to think. It would really help if anyone could give my their opinions on Mrs. Harcourt.

Keep in Mind..although its a comedy..Mrs. Harcourts husband jumped ot his death during the crash of 1929. Eli WHitney was a good freind of her husband's from Yale days.. she probably feels safe and secure around Whitney. The Harcourt's are probably penniless..and marrying Lord Evelyn presents security for Hope and by way or being her mother..Hope as well. Whitney marrying Mrs. Harcourt negates the inevidible genteel poverty that she'd be subjected to after Hope goes with Billy and Evelyn for Reno.

Thank you that really helps a lot. I'm curious as to how you know all this, trying to find exactly how I wish to portray Mrs. Harcourt is proving to be difficult. I mean I can say her lines and act the character but I don't feel as though I really understand her enough to become her and really feel as though I am Mrs. Harcourt rather than the person pretending to be her.

The stuff about Whitney and Mrs. H's husband is in the script... Whitney tells her 'I was there when your husband jumped from that window..i want you to know..he jumped like a Yale man!"

I played Hope a few years back.

I love that "jumped like a Yale man" line! Even for an Aussie I found it funny when I was in the show.

Buff :D
