Sunset ranks number five in my favorite musicals list, number two for favorite ALW. A five star musical. I think it has a really interesting score. Being a saxophonist, it always excites me when I hear my instument playing such epic melodies! The title song is one of my favorites to sing and to listen to. I do think that some of the songs are rather long and that the whole musical grinds to a halt every time Norma is on stage though I still enjoy every minute of it. If there were a few cuts made, I wouldn't mind though it's great as is. I of course love Michael Ball's version of Joe as heard in the 2004 BBC concert version. I also am very fond of the Los Angeles cast with Glenn Close (but she can't really sing..)

Close can indeed sing...her Norma voice was perfectly suited. if you want to hear Glenn sing a wider ranged vocal role, check out Barnum.

I agree, I only recently discovered the musical but I feel that in "With One Look" (IMO the best song in the show), her vocals are fine, and moreover she's the only actress (keep in mind I haven't seen Patti acting it yet) that really shows Norma's utter madness and delusion. I get chills watching her.

Her acting was was so brilliant, who cares if she can sing or not?! Though I quite like her voice.....

I thought Betty Buckley was pretty damn good. That growl she did at the end of the finale ("I'll be meeeeeeee!) is SCARY!

I'll agree Close a great actress. She's just not a great singer in my opinion...could be worse though.

It is not a great show. Sloppy lyrics and a mediocre, derivative score that doesn't shed anything new or interesting on the material. Nonetheless, it's hard to make that story bad. Norma Desmond is Norma Desmond.

I'll be seeing a regional production in July, very much looking forward to it. I'll post about it afterwards.

As with a lot of ALW scores, I really liked a small handful of stand-out songs, but found the score as a whole underwhelming. It's been so long since I've actually seen the show (I saw the touring production sometime in the mid to late 90s) - what I remember most is that it had a pretty spectacular set. I feel like the show itself was a little on the dull side, though.

the show is far from dull..its almost a perfect copy of the classic film..its one of Webber's few shows with heart & feeling.

I haven't seen the film. But is really "a perfect copy" a compliment?
I don't find the show is really dull either. But I don't find it really interesting. Actually, I'm completely indifferent about it.
