Post Cole Porter tour around Peru, IN
The best time to visit Peru, IN is the second weekend in June. There are multiple performances of his works at places around town. Guided tours of landmarks may be available from the Miami County Museum. I attended such a tour in June of 2010 and enjoyed it thoroughly. Houses described below are private residences and you should not disturb the current residents.

If you arrive in Peru, try to visit the Miami County museum (at 51 North Broadway just North of the courthouse) and pick up a map of Cole Porter landmarks titled "Cole Porter Walking / Driving Tour". If the museum is closed, this article will have to do.

Cole Porter's birthplace is at the corner of 102 East Third St (at Huntington), and is now The Cole Porter Inn:

Across Broadway from the Miami County museum at 12 North Broadway you will see a Wells Fargo Bank. This building was used for the drugstore run by Cole Porter's father. The small building immediately to the South of Wells Fargo was used by Kate Porter to run a cafe (next door to her husband's drug store). Items from Sam Porter's drugstore are on exhibit in the second floor of the Miami County museum.

The extremely ornate house mid-block just South of the courthouse at 27 East Third Street was the home of Cole Porter's maternal grandparents, who were very wealthy. His grandfather was James Omer Cole, who got rich in the California Gold Rush and moved to Peru, IN in 1867. The architectural style is "Second Empire".

Just North of the courthouse, mid-block and near the Miami County museum at 16 East 5th Street is the building (painted tan) which used to be the Emerick Opera House. This is where Cole Porter saw the curtain with the picture of Venice's Grand Canal, which was his initial inspiration to be a world traveler. He also performed violin at the Opera House in concerts organized by his mother.

Just North of the Wabash River is the Depot where Cole Porter caught the train to Marion, IN for violin lessons. This is also one of the locations for performances of Cole Porter songs during the festival (second weekends in June).

About three blocks South of the Wabash River (to the Southwest) on West Spring Street is the spring where Cole Bros Brewery obtained its water. Cole Bros water is run by descendants of Cole Porter's maternal grandparents and great-uncles. The sign may say Morecraft Manufacting or Cole Bros - I forget which.

Less than a mile to the Southeast of Peru, the Missisenewah flows into the Wabash River. One of Cole Porter's funniest songs "By the Missisenewah", concerns the native Americans who lived by the river. When he returned to visit Peru, he stayed at "Westleigh", on Frances Slocum Trail, on the East bank of the Missisenewah. Next door or two doors down is the residence of a step-grandmother of his, whose "Old-Fashioned Garden" inspired Cole's early song by that title. The current resident maintains such a garden with a sign by the road that identifies it.

The Mount Hope Cemetery where Cole Porter is buried is in the Northwest portion of Peru, on West Logan Street. Signs direct you to his grave and that of his parents, Linda and other family members.
