I love it love it love it love it love it love it.

Sure there are some flaws (would a group of guys really sing an upbeat song like 'Krupke' after their friend has just been killed?) but I think it's a masterpiece. Who cares if some of the slang isn't used anymore? It doesn't need to be completely current and 'hip'. Everyone knows its set in the 40s/50s, it uses 40s/50s slang! The music is genius, the characters are well-rounded and relatable, the lyrics are poetry. It's a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned.

A lot of the major operas have some flaws too :
- Can anyone tell me the story of The Magic Flute and keep serious? In this one, Pamino is in love with Pamina only by seeing a portray of her. But Pamina is in love with him just beacause she heard that some guy was after her to take her away from her dad... :|
- In the Trovatore, there is more action offscene than on scene... And who would believe someone could make a mistake like throwing her own baby in the fire instead of another one?
- Who ever understood the story in all those baroque operas?

But all of them are masterpieces... without a doubt!
Why would it be different with Musicals and West Side Story?

And ?
Does the fact that it's supposed to be a fairy tale (wich I disagree) or the fact that it takes place in a fantasy world implies that the story has to be non-understandable?
What about Il Trovatore ? That is one hell of a drama, and one huge masterpiece. And as most of Verdi's operas, the libretto is almost impossible to understand unless you've seriously studied it before going to the opera house.

My point is : even with some flaws, some pieces of art still are masterpieces. And to me, West Side Story is one of them, without a doubt.
But you are completely free to dislike it !
Maybe you're not touched by the music in the same ways many of us are. And this cannot be explained by words.

West Side Story is maybe the only musical I could attend blindfolded and still end up in tears.

Its not that I hate it..I just think its far from a masterpiece. the main issue is the book, but I fel the music, book and lyric really dont blend the way they should. as a concert piece..the music is quite good...I always felt Bernstien was a classisist and not a musical theatre composer, although I love his work in Candide and On the Town. yet evne in those shows his music doesnt really blend with the lyrics.

I prefer the stage version to that of the movie. The best part in my opinion is the Somewhere Ballet.

It's meant to be sardonic.
