Post How do people really feel about this show?
No sooner to I describe this musical as a magnificent classic (this was on another site), I read dozens of comments disparaging it as a dated piece of kitsch valuable only for having been groundbreaking in its day.

How do most people really feel about it?

I feel the show has its merits, but it really has not aged well. the book is clunky..the transitions from script to song are choppy, Sondheim has some troubling lyrics, by his own admission.

... But the music is sublime !
In my opinion the best music for a musical.

The score is very easy to listen to, but very elaborate and complicated at the same time. Bernstein is one of the best musician, composer and director of the second half of the XXth century.

In my opinion, it is one of the best musical ever. If not the best...

Far from the best. I agree...Bernstien's music is excellent but it works best as an orchestral piece. Even as far Bernstien's music goes I actually prefer Candide and On the Town.

are you the play or the film version? The film is quite ifferent and actually holds up better structurally and artistically, due to script rewrites, juxtpositioning of songs and expert cinemetography.

the play is creaky and has alot of lcumsy transitions, poorly written dialouge and poor scene changes.

I think that west side story has some flaws and parts that are very oldfashioned but for me that is part of the charm. It is a musical I would love to be in or see over and over. P.S: this is my first post! :D

I love both versions. Movie and stage version.

Of course, the movie corrected some flaws in the storytelling. And some absolutely outstanding new musical material was added. I'm thinking of the "Xylophone" part in the prologue.

But the stage version is also very good. The Choreography is very important as it really is part of the action. The dream scene is wonderful, and also the prologue and Cool.
You may prefer other musicals from Bernstein, but in my opinion, West Side Story is musically far beyond any other musical. Its success and reputation is huge among popular audiences and also among contemporary “classical” music lovers. And that means a lot. A music that succeeded in being both highly elaborate and popular.

As for the supposedly old-fashioned feeling... Well we just have to accept that this story doesn’t takes place nowadays. And if the style is old-fashioned, that means it has style, what many musical works lack desperately!
Are "Dialogues des Carmélites" or "Die Zauberflöte" old fashioned? Same here...

Last… Of course, some may think the theatrical part of West Side Story has some major flaws. Still : The one who doesn’t hold some tears at Maria’s “Don’t you touch him” in the last scene has no heart… That means that all in all, it works… ;)

It is the greatest musical of all time. If a being from deep space were to take over our world and permit us to perform only one musical a year, West Side Story would receive my vote. (The alien emperor has a democratic side.)

Of the ones you listed, only Gypsy and Sweeney would be on my short list for greatest ever along with WSS. Glad to see no ACL on your list though.

My short list would include :
- Les Misérables
- Sound of Music
- Oliver!
- Carousel
- (Not exactly a musical, but still : ) White Horse Inn

But Sure, WSS would be on top of it...

Salome, you don't like it... Well things like that happens... ;)
I don't quite like Donizetti myself... Even if he's one one the greatest opera composer of all time!
