I dont agree with everything that Apples is saying here Hans..but as much as I adore Sondheim and find him a genius..he does say some off base and unwarrented things in his "Finishing the Hat" ..expecially about people who are on his same high artistic level or possible higher, such as Noel Coward (who wasnt called "the Master' for nothing).

I don't recall him saying anything really disparaging about Coward. He acknowledged that the man was a protean talent and a master craftsman, he just thinks there were other theatrical lyricists who had more to say. Like Dorothy Fields. And considering how basically everyone who he discusses in the book are dead, it's not as though anyone's feelings or reputation is at stake.

Best Music- Wait
Best Lyrics- By the Sea
Worst Music- Wigmaker Sequence
Worst Lyrics- City on Fire

Boo, I disagree with all of those. Best Music in particular, since Sondheim said that that's the piece he is least happy with in the score. But especially your thoughts of City on Fire having the worst lyrics - 'City on Fire' literally takes off and explodes, boasting cascading phrases of violent imagery with obscene hyperboles and metaphors to conjure an intense, visceral nightmare. Too bad you don't appreciate it the same way as I do!
