Poor excuse. The point is Butler is the Phantom for ALL posterity. I have no problem with that.

ALW seems to favor Ramin Karimloo. I love his Phantom. Colm Wilkinson's holds a very special place in my heart. Anthony Warlow is probably the best. Butler can't do the role live without electronic pitch correction and even in the movie he made me cringe. Let's leave him out.

Michael Crawford, because:
1. He originated the role
2. His voice is amazing.

Second-favorite is Hugh Panaro, who I was lucky enough to see play Erik on Broadway about a month ago. I've noticed a lot of people on YouTube dissing his voice, but I thought he was fantastic! We all had tears rolling down our cheeks as he sang the last lines of "Final Lair"...

I've only seen McGillin and Panaro. It's been almost three years since I saw Howard, so I can only remember thinking he had a good voice and commanded the stage well. But I saw Hugh this past Tuesday night and thought he was amazing. I'm not a Phantom fan in the first place, but for the first time I made a genuine connection with the show and it was because of Panaro's spectacular performance. He makes the Phantom very crazy so that you're intimidated and believe it when he does all these terrible things, but at the same time his Erik is also very human and sympathetic. I found the other performers to be rather sub-par, so until "Down Once More" I was not very captured or impressed by the show. But as Panaro led us down this final stretch, I was finally able to appreciate The Phantom of the Opera (even if I still don't like it and find the writing poor), and for that I thank him.

Yeah Panaro is the one good thing about the Broadway company right now.

Michael Crawford for originating such a great role and performing it to excellence.

Michael Crawford. He was amazing both live and in the recording and was very into the part. He created a lot of the Phantom's mannerisms that you see others imitating today. He is the one that, to me, is the most emotionally powerful. Ramin Karimloo was also excellent, but a bit more of a power singer than Michael Crawford, so he had his own style. I enjoyed his interpretation in the 25th a lot. I got to see Hugh Panaro in November, and I was very impressed with both his vocals and how he held the audience. He was amazing and I would love to see him again.
