First off, I think Elaine Page sucks so badly that I am still amazed whenever someone find her good. Secondly I love Patti LuPone's performance and think she has every quality needed for Eva. She fitted the part perfectly and didn't end up as a whiny bitch such as Page, although Evita may have been Page's best performance since she barely had to act, being that she herself slept her way to the top by ruining at least one marriage.

So, my vote goes to LuPone.

I've noticed that when it comes to Evita, people usually go with their country's original Eva or they prefer Madonna. It's only us Americans who seem to always prefer Patti Lupone! :P

A lot of Spanish speaking people favor Spain's Paloma San Basilio. While I do like her acting, her voice fluctuates between sweet to manly sounding. I think it works in her favor but there's an obvious strain in her voice and her notes in "A New Argentina" sound haggish. A very good Eva, but definitely not my favorite and her "Rainbow High" is actually one of her weakest sung tracks on the cast album. There's a video of her performing part of the song in a concert and she sounds so much stronger live than on the recording.

My favorite "Rainbow High" is hands-down Patti Lupone's version. Her cast album version is actually pretty subdued compared to her live performance of it.

With that, I shall finish my orchestral "Rainbow High" track and screech my version into a P.C. mic! It will be the best version evvvvvverrr. XD

Must be true, because of the versions I've hear, I prefer Jennifer Murphy. Her version is strong, demanding and determined, without become angry and shouting.

Without a doubt, Covington's version is my favourite.

Andy.

Well of course I love Patti's version all the way!!
And a a Spanish speaker I prefer Rocío Banquells, she was the mexican Evita, and in my opinion the song is better translatd and performed...

Rofl. I like your banner. XD

Should have captured a still of Lupone doing that melodramatic (but highly effective) Christ-like pose seen on that boot of "Don't Cry For Me" on YouTube.

I will have do disagree.

I think Patti Lupone sings this song horrible! All the high notes are weirdly slide up and down and cut- I like her for alot of characters but Eva is not one of them :P I just don't think it fits her voice very well.. I guess I'm just too used to Elaine P maeby- I think her Eva is spot on and perfect in every way- it just fits her so well!

I just found this video where they switch between Elaine and Patti, and it just made it even clearer who I like the best:

One can judge how great a particular Eva is by how well she did in Buenos Aires and Rainbow High imho.

I only ever heard a few ones who nailed it, namely:
Patti LuPone
Valerie Perri
Elaine Paige
Terri Klausner
Stephanie Lawrence
Loni Ackerman
Florence Lacey

They're the reason why I can't tolerate other actors who play Eva. :p

Not familiar with Elaine in Evita, but I saw her in Follies back in December. She. Was. FLAWLESS. Belting her brains out. Better than any Carlotta I've ever seen or heard.
