 Is Brigadoon a good show?
We're looking at the shows to do in the next few months and I was thinking that Brigadoon might be worth a try but I have never seen it. Is it a genuinely good show? Is it box office? Or is it like Music Man and Man of La Mancha - box office death.

Re: Is Brigadoon a good show?
I personally love Brigadoon. The story comes off as a bit confusing at first, but the music is absolutely stunning. "Come to Me, Bend to Me," and "There But For You Go I" are my favorites. Our audiences (who tend to be an older crowd) gave us great reviews, saying they very much enjoyed it. There were a few nights that the audience wasn't terribly full, but we did pretty well in the box office, overall.

Re: Is Brigadoon a good show?
Thanks LotL.
We're in the same position as a lot of local groups in that we can't afford to choose a poor box office show. Half the battle seems to be choosing something that people will have heard of. I'm not sure that Brigadoon will hit that button. Maybe with an older audience (like ours) this will be a hit...? It certainly hasn't been done in our area for at least 20 years!

Re: Is Brigadoon a good show?
Brigadoon is like when you're talking to an old person and you really don't want to be talking to them but you feel kind of bad because they're so cute and old and oblivious. Brigadoon's like that. There's some really pretty music (agreed with Come to Me Bend to Me and There But For You Go I being the best; honorable mention goes to Once in the Highlands) but it's also, at its core, old and boring. There's a whole lot of BORING dancing, a plot that makes so little sense that it's BORING, central characters that are BORING (Jeff, Meg, and Harry being the only interesting characters), and the entire premis of the plot is explained in a long-winded, BORING monologue from Mr Lundie that half the audience won't listen to. Sorry for harshly slamming Brigadoon; it really does have a special place in my heart. But if you ask me, if you're looking for excited audiences and box office success... keep looking. While charming, it's dated and dull.

Thank you - maybe that's why it hasn't been done in our area for 20+ years!

Are these box office death? Why? Both are awesome shows. I have never seen Brigadoon or read the script, but it has a kick ass score.

To people like you and me who know something about the shows then no they're not - I rather like Music Man but you try selling tickets for it.
To the average person that we're trying to attract I reckon that 95% of them have never heard of either show and that seems to be half the battle.

man of la mancha and music man always sell out when done.
as for brigadoon its a great show..but it needs to be done right, by people who understand the show, its setting, its period etc..

The best thing about this show is the Wedding Sword Dance.

the best thing are Alan Lerner's brilliant lyrics.

Re: Is Brigadoon a good show?
Once was enough for me. The comic female songs kept me awake and the character of Jeff had great lines. It can be a great show when done right but my director cast the show with actors who were too young. The bar scene had 5 year olds etc... The Music Man was a better experience for me.

Re: Is Brigadoon a good show?
I've SEEN a good performance of it, but it had an outstanding local director at the helm, and some very strong talent in the leads that elevated the material. It's awfully dated, and there's some of that that can't even be rectified by staging it in period. It's just stylistically ... old.
