NO!
It depends on the director.

When I was Annie they wanted me to wear a wig but it wouldn't fit over my super long and really think brown hair...so they gave up and I just made sure it was curly. I don't think hair color matters much...hey in a way I got to break the sterotype that blondes are the stupid ones.

I have been in 3 Annie playing Annie all three times and two times yes Lily did have Blonde hair, but that was just the actress playing. But just this last time Lily had Red/Auburn hair and it was just fine and she was fantastic.

 Is Lily always blonde?
I've seen blonde, brunette and redhead actresses playing Lily. All else being equal, the hair colour does not have to define the character.

I hope not, otherwise MY role in this show goes out the window!

 Re: is lily always blonde?
why would the color of an actresses hair have anything to do with the charcter? there is always hair color, beauticians and of course wigs.

 Re: is lily always blonde?
Dear Salome, Try telling that to some of the Phans! I think that there are musicals within which a character's physical coloration IS important. I personally think of Lily as being a blonde, but, then again, I can't really say that a brunette, or a redhead, or even a brownette couldn't play the role convincingly. Thanks in advance for your reply.

BUT- I am currently cast in this show as Grace, and Lily's hair color is never specified (I really think she could be anything, as long as the actor is good). HOWEVER, Rooster twice refers to Grace as "Blondie" (it's what triggers her memory at the mansion to figure out that Mr. Mudge is really Rooster) so Grace should be some sort of blonde (unless you change the line).

 Re: is lily always blonde?
No! My best friend played Lily in a production of Annie, and she has dark brown/auburn hair. Originally, the costume director wanted her to wear a blond wig, but the colour of the wig was so bleach blond and ugly the director decided not to use it. Plus, we couldn't get the wig to fit on her fat head :p

 Re: is lily always blonde?
I don't see why the color of the hair would matter. It is more the portrayal of Lilly that has to be done correctly. In the production I was in our Lilly did have Blonde Hair, but I don't know if that was her natural color or not.
