Bumping a little bit, sorry
I'm not particularly familiar with the show (i.e. pretty much all my knowlege of it comes from bottlegs or the concert version) but here are my views all the same.
Josh Groban- I love him but he isn't an actor. I agree that he is too young to play Anatoly and the fact that his accent isn't Russian does bug me a little but tbh I don't think he'd be able to manage a believable accent. Vocally I thought he was good but, to be fair, I am biased.
Adam Pascal- I love him as well. Regarding an earlier comment that he seemed to be playing the same character as he did in Rent: I disagree. I think that the characters are very similar in the self-loathing aspect and so the comparison will inevitably be made but in some places I thought the character was very clearly different. His Pity the Child was excellent and I love his voice. Oh and his rapping in One Night in Bankok made me laugh
Idina Menzel- Nasal vocals and no chemistry between the other actors. Also: Florence is BRITISH. Please
play her with a British accent! The constant riffing annoyed me but Mountain Duet made me laugh
And her 'No! I've spent my whole life playing games!' made me cringe.
Kerry Ellis- Accent was dreadful- Svetlana really needs to be Russian. And she was the only person in the whole show whose pronuncian of 'Anatoly' made me cringe. Acting was poor. She smiled the whole
way through Someone Else's Story. Although I wasn't a fan of Menzel I really don't think that Ellis would have done much better as Florence.
Marti Pellow- Vocals were weak and overamplified
Walter de Courcey (can't remember who played him
)- Fair but seemed a little pointless.
David Bedella- Personally I thought he was good and his dancing made me laugh, although it was worked much better in Fiddler on the Roof
