Anyone Ever Build Your Own Puppets?
My community theater group will be producing Little Shop next summer with yours truly directing.
A little background on myself: I'm an art school dropout married to another art school dropout. At least half of what has me so jazzed to put this together is getting to design my sets and build my puppets since we're able to do so much of it ourselves.
Renting just isn't good enough and we've already budgeted for building our own with the plan being that we'll rent them out as a revenue source in the future.
I don't have the plans that MTI provides and don't plan on waiting for them for many reasons, not the least of which is that I don't get them until May of next year (our show will be in August) and I want to have the puppets completed by the time we start rehearsals. I also have some very particular ideas about what I want the puppets to look like that don't match with the original designs.
I have my copy of the script and am creating my list of things each puppet has to do, so I have some rough sketches but nothing 3D yet. My plan is to build the big puppet first and move backwards from large to small.
Anyone ever build their own or assist in building them? I'd love some advice if you have. I might even listen to some of it.
