Post Spanish songs back to English...WTF.
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/13 ... Side_Story

I'm really curious as to their reasons for doing this. The show is up and running and people are coming, so why the change??
I happen to love the spanish lyrics and think Karen and Josefina deliver them beautifully.

I have no idea. I never really liked the idea of changing the songs anyways though so no complaints from this corner.

There's the article for anyone interested.

Personally I'm glad because some of the translations were off/enunciation was off in some of the parts when I saw it in the preview. But yeah...

And I'm glad because the change made no sense whatsoever, even when Laurents tried to justify it.

No, they did make sense, ESP. A Boy Like That.

The whole point of that, is that the entire show Antia ONLY lets Bernardo and Maria speak English when they're in her presence (trying to make them more American), BUT, as soon as Bernardo is killed, Anita goes right back to Spanish, and hates America.

After seeing the show 2 weeks ago, however, that song is now back in English. BUT, "I Feel Pretty" is still in spanish.

The way he used them made dramatic sense, I'm not arguing that, but translating the songs into Spanish in general was a silly idea.

I was initially against the translations because it seemed they did it to whole songs. But after seeing it just the other night, it works.

The old folks sitting in front of me made no mystery of their utter dislike of the translations. They grunted, complained, and gave ghetto attitude throughout. Too bad they aren't bilingual.

The idea of having the Sharks and their girls sing the songs and speak their dialogue in Spanish was an interesting idea on the face of it, but it didn't really work, and it seemed rather out of place. So, no complaints from these quarters about changing the Shark songs and dialogue back to English, either.
