How isn't there a thread on this show already?!

It's about a typical suburban American family that gets torn apart by mental illness. One of the best original musicals in a very, very long time, in my opinion. The cast (Alice Ripley, J. Robert Spencer, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson) are all completely phenomenal, and if Alice doesn't get a Tony for Best Actress, something is wrong with the world. The score is pure brilliance as well.

The cast recording became available for download today - do yourself a favour and get it now!

I'm in the process of downloading it now-I've heard a couple of the songs and I love them, so I'm VERY excited!

Plus, I love Aaron Tveit. :D

I saw it a couple weeks ago. I almost went to Billy Elliot instead, but I'm so glad I decided on Next to Normal! Definitely the best original musical since Rent (with Spring Awakening being considered an adaptation). The entire cast is amazing and the music is phenomenal. I'm rooting for it hard at the Tony's.

This show is incredible! I saw it with Kyle Dean Massey as temporary replacement for Aaron Tveit, but he was wonderful, so I'm not disappointed at all.

Well, the show is pretty new, I think we have to wait for a Next to Normal board.

Don't get your hopes up. :( As sad as it is, there are tons of shows that deserve boards before Next to Normal does (Camelot, Follies, Parade, Nine, Man of La Mancha, Mame, etc.) and if Next to Normal, by chance, even gets a board, then I'm almost 99% sure Billy Elliot will get one too.

Haven't seen it, but after seeing the Tony performance, I listened to the score and loved it.

It's a bit too heavy of a musical in subject matter for me to think about seeing it at this time, but I'm sure I'll catch it at some point.

Rent was based on LaBoheme.

Agreed. After seeing the Tonys performance, I thought the music was dreadful, but I'm probably in the minority. Definitely an interesting topic, though.

(I'm not going to go through the process of downloading the whole thing if THAT was what they chose to showcase.)

Agreed. I did not care for the music in the slightest.
