Does one need to be as good as Tyne Daly in order to be outstanding?

What would ever make you think otherwise? I don't get this. This is not a cast recording we are discussing. ANY woman who plays Rose NEEDS to be a fantastic actress. She needs to be on top of her game.

And Tyne Daly's singing was still better than Roz/Lisa. Had she been less of an actress, her voice would have been detracting because she didn't have an outstanding voice.

So now Rosalind Russell was not as good an actress as Tyne Daly?!

Why didn't they just cast someone who could do it all, like Judy Garland?

Judy Garland was very close to playing Rose for the film.

Until LuPone played her I would have said Lansbury, but...wow.

She's not the best, but I actually really like Bernadette Peters as Rose. Lansbury, LuPone, and Merman were great too.

Keep in mind, I'm a) 14 years old and b) poor as nails, so I haven't seen Gypsy live yet...unless bootlegs count. So I'm basing this solely on Tony performances, bootlegs, and recordings.

Arthur Laurents has weighed in on the matter, saying that his favourite is Patti LuPone. LuPone may be near the top of the pile, but she's no Angela Lansbury in the role - so even if she is his favourite, I don't think she's the one who's been the best.

Because Arthur Laurents' 'Rose' is not really "Rose Thompson Havoc", it doesn't necessarily mean much.

But in this interview

http://www.startribune.com/entertainmen ... c:_Yyc:aUU

"Rose's daughter, June, who has just passed away, called me and said she had never spoken to anyone who had played the role but she would talk to me because I was the most like her mother. Her mother basically was little and blond and a mankiller. She wasn't the big battle-ax. So it gave me a lot of confidence in playing the role."

It's not very clear if she acted or looked most like her, however.

well Lansbury was blonde and slim as well far from a battle ax in her portrayal as well.

In my humble opinion, the three best have been, in this order:

1) Lansbury
2) LuPone
3) Peters

With Daly in a close 4th. The thing is, and believe me, I am ALL for saying that the ACTING comes first, but with such an iconic role as Rose, if you're not a strong singer, your performance becomes completely ineffective. That's what happened with Daly, unfortunately. Her acting was BRILL from what I've seen, though!
