There is no Evita OBC. It's called The Los Angeles Premeire recording. It's the recording I listen to the most. I must admit, the mix is very poor.

Funny cause I debated whether or not to call it the American premiere recording or OBC as most people know it. True, technically it's the L.A. recording but I think it's safe to call it OBC as well as it features the same cast that opened the show on Broadway.

I'm not too fond of the film soundtrack due to Madonna's weak vocals and performance. I love Antonio and Jonathan though. The film orchestrations are very nice, but I don't like the slight melody change in Requiem for Evita.

I love the OLC recording's orchestra, but I agree the vocals are blah. I can't stand Elaine's rendition of Buenos Aires. Sounds like she's pinching her nose, or something.

LuPone/Patinkin for the win. I love everything about that recording. Their voices blend so well together.

The American Premiere cast album, definitely. There are other cast albums that feature better orchestrations (Madrid, Osaka, even the film), but Patti's cast is magic from beginning to end, in my opinion.

She is far from screechy. She improved greatly by the time of the Cats film. Not to mention she has great power and lots of emotion in her voice.

No doubt, the American Premier Recording with PATTI PATTI PATTI PATTI PATTI PATTI!!!!!!!! It is magical, and I don't even have it on CD (only on vinyl). Patti LuPone is an amazing actress/singer and does that role well. As for the OLC, again, only on vinyl, but it just doesn't have the same "Boom" that the OBC has, and the concept recording is really good, but the killer is the bizarre orchestration for "A New Argentina."

Just thought I'd dredge up an old topic rather than make a new one.

I just got the original Australian cast recording, and personally, I love it.

Jennifer Murphy
Peter Carroll
John O'May
Tony Alvarez
Laura Mitchell

Unfortunately it's only highlights, but it has some great work from Eva and Che. Some of the lyrics are very different from the movie.

I like the soundtrack, I think Madonna does a good job. But my favorite recording of Evita is The Original London Cast. Elaine Paige's Rainbow High and Dont Cry For Me Argentina, cant be beat

Elaine Page's Rainbow High is squeaky. She uses too much glissando and her phrasing is unnatural. Patti LuPone has magnificent phrases and she is able to actually hit the notes. The ensemble on the American album is also stronger, and David Essex couldn't sing well if his life depended on it!

I am not saying that the American Album is best "no question", but I have yet to meet someone who knows their dramaturgy who thinks Elaine Page does a good job on the Evita recording.
