"Daown In Yon Foraest" is the bleakest, darkest, most disturbing Christmas song ever. Let me see if I can find the lyrics to show you.

Here they are, in an modern English translation. To hear the song, click this link: http://doubtfulpalace.com/artists/ConjureWife/ditf.mp3

Down in the forest there stands a hall,
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them ring)
Is covered all over with purple so tall.
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

In that high hall there stands a bed,
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them ring)
Is covered all over with scarlet and red
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

All in that bed there lies a knight
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them ring)
Whose wounds they do bleed with main and with might.
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

And under that bed there runs a flood.
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them sing)
The one half runs water, the other runs blood.
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

And at the bed's foot there lies a hound
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them ring)
A-licking the blood as it daily runs down,
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

All at the bed's head there flowers a thorn,
(The bells of Paradise, I heard them ring)
Which never so blossomed since Jesus was born.
(And I love my Lord Jesus above any thing).

I could lock up a platoon,
I'll be strapping up an inmate,
Very tightly, very soon.
So wave one bachelor goodbye,
She'll be your bride- she'd rather die
Than have her daddy ossify
In my sordid saloon..."

Here are a selection of Christmas carols and songs I like:

We Three Kings
What Child is This?
I Saw Three Ships
A Place Called Home (From the musical version of "A Christmas Carol")
The First Noel
The Coventry Carol (Look it up if you're not familiar with it. It's beautiful.)

I love singing "I wonder as I wander" acappella. Plaintive, very soft, the words just barely reaching the audience. I also love doing the Wexford Carol acappella.

Some nice arrangements in a book called "Classical carols". I especially like the aforementioned Wexford Carol and I saw three ships. There is also a great duet of The holly and the ivy.

- Carols from King's - there is nothing like that treble sound. Plus the Willcocks descants are unsurpassed! I grew up on them (years singing in a church choir) and can still sing them all from memory.
- John Rutter's Candlelight Carol and Nativity Carol - I have a CD called "Christmas Night" which is the City of London Singers conducted by Rutter himself and it is unbelievable.
- The Three Kings (not We Three Kings) - I've sung it in choirs a couple of times and with a great soloist it's wonderful.
- The Pogues Fairytale of New York

Michael Crawford's O Holy Night owns the world. Then again, most O Holy Night's own the world.

I enjoy O Holy Night, but I really can't listen to it anymore. I've heard it done so badly, by so many poor singers, that it seeps into my mind even when I listen to it done well. Shame, 'cause it is a really great song.
