Well excuse me for not being aware of South Pacific

This makes me a bit sad. Anyone else? "South Pacific" is one of the most wonderful shows ever written.

Any other fans?

It's my favorite R&H. Favorite moments:

The end of act I: Once you have found her, never let her go. Once you have found her never let her GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

When Nellie has her psuedo-breakdown and has her great monologue in act II

Honey Bun

At the end of act II when Nellie and Emile grab hands under the table.

Can you believe this was 1949? I am constantly impressed by how forward thinking Oscar Hammerstein was.

As I am getting older and learning so much about theatre, I truly think South Pacific is my favorite musical.

It is just simply brilliant. The score is majestic and perfect, the book is challenging and smart, funny, heart-breaking, and still relevant today.

I weep when the overture starts.

South Pacific is just...sheer beauty. It reminds me why I do what I do.

Very occasionally, I like to sing "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right out of My Hair" when I'm washing my hair. I know I'm not the only one.

One of my favorite musicals of all time, definitely my favorite R&H show. Too bad they messed up the movie of it with the weird colorization. It was a ground breaking show, the first one of the genre to really tackle racial pregudice. It won the pulitzer prize, one of the few musicals ever to do so.

My favorite scenes in the show are "You've got to be taught", "This nearly was mine", and for comic relief it's hard to beat "Honey Bun".

It's interesting. R&H are my least favorite of the "big" musical writing teams, and I never much liked South Pacific probably BECAUSE of the movie. However, as I thought about it for this thread, I realized how many of the songs and individual moments of the show I like and admire, and I conclude that it was a groundbreaking, beautifully scored piece of work.

Interesting side note: I wrote a musical review which was the last show we did at a school where I used to teach (it's now closed, another victim of the parochial school massacre in Detroit). For the show I wrote a medley of "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught/Children Will Listen" which I sang as sort of a goodbye. (Yes, I know Mandy did one too. Mine was different, although around the same time.) Sitting on a stool in the pit, with a single spot on me. (It was actually used to get the stage and cast ready for the finale, time wise, but it was still a moment I will always treasure.)

That sounds like a gorgeous idea. Wow.
