I think the title is pretty self-explanatory. What year(s) do you think had the greatest shows on the great white way?

1959, without a doubt. It yielded Once Upon A Mattress, Gypsy, Sound of Music, Destry Rides Again, and Fiorello.

Just my opinion -- I don't even consider that the best season of its decade. 1957 had the start of the runs for Music Man and West Side Story. Personal taste -- I don't particularly care for any of the shows from 1959, aside from carryover affection for Sound of Movie from the (better) movie version. Not to mention A Long Day's Journey into Night. 1959 had no really memorable straight play debuts.

Looking down the list of tony noms from each year... wow. Maybe I'm not giving the past enough credit, but 2003 looks really hard to beat, top to bottom. For new musicals: Avenue Q, The Boy from Oz, Caroline, or Change, and Wicked. Revivals included Assassins, Big River, Fiddler on the Roof, and Wonderful Town.
