I'm always game for a new Show Boat, although this one is for Goodspeed in Connecticut rather than Broadway. Still, it is nice to see the Harold Prince version being dusted off for a high profile production.

I've heard of them and know it isn't Broadway. But like you said, it's the Hal Prince version of the book, which is the most satisfying among the many versions. It also respects the original work, unlike the London version of the 70's that toyed with the orchestrations.

Showboat is one of my all-time favorite shows - especially when with the Hal Prince book. I would love to see this.

OMG. Ben Davis is to play Gaylord Ravenal in this production!! There's a video up on BWW which shows him singing "You Are Love" and he sounds absolutely gorgeous. I don't usually get hyped up over an actor, or actors as I'm much more about the works themselves and, of course, the company as a whole and how well they serve/present/become the material. But Ben is an exception in that he alone only makes it easier to decide I will be spending a few days in NYC and East Haddam, Connecticut this summer! :D

The video includes Hammerstein's daughter talking about what the show means to her and the director speaking about his approach and concept in adapting the musical for the Goodspeed stage. I am so far very impressed, and excited!! His concept zeros in on fundamentals instead of cheesy, hokey gimmickry as seen in other revivals of other musicals nowadays.

Watch the video here: http://broadwayworld.com/videoplay.php?colid=241114

Sounds like they will be putting together their own version of the book and handpicking numbers from the vast resources available, and the one they will be focusing on is the 1946 Broadway revival, but will also incorporate elements and plot points from other versions.

While I am slightly disappointed they aren't going with the book and musical numbers of the definitive Hal Prince version as initially announced, I do feel confident they will deliver something that respects the integrity of the original work and infuse it with their own creative talents in a way that only compliments and enhances what's already great.

And it stars BEN. \:D/

I might have to find a way to see this.
Not sure if it was just for the promo video or if it will be for the show, but their clip of him singing You Are Love was lowered a full step. That was disappointing.
