I was wondering, which cast albums should be considered essential to a musical theatre fan?

I want reasonable and logical suggestions that can be backed up by an argument for your reasoning. A reason could be financial success (Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera) or artistic quality (Oklahoma! - reason: Started "the Golden Age", etc.)

Those are the two categories, and it would be great to hear your thoughts about which recordings of musicals should be considered essential.

West Side Story.

I feel it's necessary. =]

Company and Show Boat...both were groundbreakers in theatre as the first concept musical and the first musical drama, respectively. I would add Carousel as well as WSS to Dawn's almost-complete list!

I like Rex and all, but is it really essential? Especially compared to the likes of Sweeney Todd or Company?

I agree that Rex is Rodgers' best score, post-Hammerstein. I'm still not sure if I'd put it as the be-all, end-all essentials, but it's a good one to have. :)

I think there are several cathegories of Essential Cast Albums.

First, these are the ones I personally think are the Top Ten of musical theatre:

Carousel (RNT recording)
Kiss Me, Kate
My Fair Lady (OBCR)
West Side Story (obc)
Gypsy (Lupone revival)
Cabaret (Revival, but you also need Cliff's songs)
Mary Poppins (soundtrack)
Sweeney Todd (obcr)
Evita (concept)
Sunday in the Park with George (obcr)

Then I think the ancestors/parents of mt are essential:

Oklahoma! (RNT)
Porgy and Bess
Pal Joey
Show Boat
The Threepenny Opera

Good recordings of the great R&H show are necessary, as are o(b)crs of all Sondheim shows. I think one also ought to have recordings of the shows that won the Pulitzer - can anyone tell me where I can get a full recording of Of Thee I Sing?

I think there are more cathegories, I'll think about it.

^ What she said. I like the Peters recording too, although it doesn't seem to be too popular.

Hans, I've been wondering where I could get a recording of Of Thee I Sing for a while too. I saw there was a joint recording of that and Let 'Em Eat Cake on Amazon. I kinda want that. :)

No reason one can't have both.
