It does need some work.

I saw it about a week and a half ago. The best way I can think to describe it is " musical theater for newbies."

The book felt lazy and like it was trying too hard simultaneously. The review in the NYT, while uncharitable and possibly a little harsh, was more or less on target.

Nathan Lane was good, as you'd expect. Bebe Neuwirth is shamefully underutilized. All the funny, manic lines to to Lane, as they should; unfortunately, so do all the deadpan wisecracks, which should've gone to Neuwirth.

The show has structural issues, too; Wednesday and her love interest, who is so bland I've forgotten his name, are the very reason for the plot and they disappear for great stretches of the show. As a result, we get next to no characterization on them, even though they should be the focal point of the plot. #-o

Musically, it's not memorable. I remember thinking that Wednesday's song, "Pulled" could've come from Legally Blonde. It was so...generic.

It feels like a cheap version of Meet the Parents and that's not a good thing. When Fester overshadows Morticia...the show has issues.

It needs a ton of work which basically at this point it isn't going to be worked on so its just mediocre.

I paid under 30 bucks for my ticket so I did not mind coughing that up to see that fantastic cast (all of whom were excellent) but the score is just dreadful. The book scenes are very funny but every time they start to sing it kills the momentum.

It seems to be pleasing the tourists though, and that's what makes the money!

I loved every minute of the Addams Family- and I am not a "newbie" as someone mentioned. You should certainly take your entire family to this entertaining, funny and endearing musical. It was worth every penny.
