No- it's just no longer the finale "proper," I.E. the last thing you hear them singing at the end of the show. I'm A Believer is the encore, but it's still the "Technical" finale.

I heard it replaced the 'encore' of Freak Flag or something..was this true or do they extend the length of the show?

I MAY BE GETTING TO SEE THIS SOON!

I am beyond excited!

I first came across it while trumbling through the iTunes of a friend of mine (she's a theater guru), and I was amused and made a CD as a lark. MY GOD! It's adorable, and fun, and GOOD! I was so shocked. Now I try and force it on everyone I know, generally the conversation goes like this:
Random Other Person: Shrek, The Musical? Really?
Me: Yeah, I know. BUT IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD!

And then they agree :) I do have some theater friends who simply refuse to give it a chance, though, but hey, it's their loss! It's a fun show, it's not intending to be the next Les Miz. OH, I hope they haven't booted the Finale, it's one of my favourite pieces.

I guess commercialism knows no bounds in musical theatre these days.

I guess I was wrong: Shrek will be closing on Broadway in January. Still, what do you suppose Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg's statement in regard to the closing is about? Not how good a show this was, or how proud they were to have produced it; it's about the money:

While we were hopeful that the show would have had a longer run on Broadway we believe it will continue to create financial value for the company and deliver profits beyond our initial investment.

And if there really are any doubts about whether or not Dreamworks is in this for the profits alone, how's this for some proof:

We plan to monetize Shrek The Musical in a number of ways going forward.

Monetize? Seriously?

Come on - I mean, sure, theatre is a business, but that's only a part of the picture. Dreamworks certainly makes it difficult not to be mean-spirited and cynical when it comes to viewing their productions. Or maybe we should just call them commodities and be done with it.

In the next step in the process of monetizing Shrek, the show will be released on DVD.Later daysDavid

I never got to see Shrek before it closed, and I was gutted.
Apparently they're going to release a DVD of it on Broadway! I really hope so, beacause the downside to living in England is the fact you can't go to New York any time you want.
I love the music and the heart of Shrek the Musical and was sad to see it close.

Amanda Holden has been cast as Fiona and Richard Blackwood as Donkey.

WTF?

I hate this industry. I dislike Amanda Holden less than say... Martine McCucheon... but I still dislike her enough to be really angry that they didn't go with a more seasoned MT performer like Julie Atherton or Summer Strallen. I don't want to see a TV star/talent show judge play a lead in a West End musical... it's icky.

Can she even sing anywhere near as well as Sutton?

Micheal Ball is top tip to take Shrek. I like the Ballster but does he have to take every high-profile role on the West End? A bit of variety puh-lease.

Ok. Rant over.

they won't get Michael Ball. Iis he not doing Sweeney Todd next year with Imelda Staunton? Would probably be a bit impractical him doing both. RE. Amanda Holden, at least she has the singing and dancing and acting experience so she won't be a complete dead loss. I don't deny she wasn't my first top pick but they could have done a damn sight worse with Fiona. Richard Blackwood I really cannot comment on as I don't know him at all, I'll look him up though and report back.
