Post subject:  Spring Awakening - Revised Purple Summer lyrics

Just got back from the show, and the lyrics for the beginning of Purple Summer are completely different than on the recording (and I LOVE them!). So I was wondering if anybody had them written down, or any info on the change. Thanks!!

As for why the lyrics changed, I'm not quite sure, but I found a video of "Purple Summer" on YouTube and the new lyrics seem to be as follows:

---

A summer's day
A mother sings
A song of purple summer
Through the heart of everything

And heaven waits
So close it seems
To show her child the wonders
Of a world beyond her dreams

The earth will wave with corn
The day so white, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne

And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer

And so I wait
The swallow brings
A song of what's to follow
The glory of the spring

The fences sway
The porches swing
The clouds begin to thunder
Crickets wander, murmuring

The earth will wave with corn
The day so white, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne

And all shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer
All shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer

And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer

---

I hope that helps!

found a recording of the show, and this is what I got!!

----------

Listen to what's in the heart of a child
a song so big and one so small
soon you will hear where beauty lies
you'll hear and you'll recall
the sadness, the doubt, all the loss, the grief
will belong to some play from the past
as the child leads the way to a dream of belief
a time of hope to the last

--------------

now..I'm certain that that last line is incorrect..my reording skipped and missed a word somewhere. But this is sung RIGHT before Purple Summer, and kind of has the same tune as My Junk

The Lyrics are different because the cd came out while the show was still in previews so they were still making changes, the order of the cd is also incorrect, but the first print of the cd has a couple of errors, one of the actors isnt even credited

they added this to the beginning of Purple Summer to make it more of a "finale"

also, they replaced the song "there once was a pirate" with the song "the guilty ones." since the pirate song was taken out, a lot of the ship/pirate imagery used in a lot of the songs (specifically "touch me") no longer made sense, so they chagned the lyrics.

I thought that the "men on distant ship" things were people traveling to America.

Thats interesting.

The entire musical is about sex, so that wouldn't be suprising, either.

I wouldn't say that the ENTIRE show is about sex. It's just a main theme. If someone asked me to describe what the show was about in one phrase I would probably say, 'teen angst,' not sex.

the reason the lyrics are different on the soundtrack is because the soundtrack was recorded in-between off-broadway and broadway. after the show moved to broadway, there were some changes in the lyrics. you'll also notice that the order of the songs is different on the soundtrack. that's because after the show moved to broadway, "the guilty ones" was moved ahead of "don't do sadness/blue wind." i think it's because "the guilty ones" comes right after intermission and basically wraps up everything that happens in the first act.

and also, it's "the days so wide, so warm," not "so white, so warm." and in the beginning, it's "a song so big in one so small," not "a song so big and one so small." minor mistakes =]
