Really? They changed the lyrics from the ones on the cd? Do you suppose they might re-release the cd with the changes in the future?

Quote:
A summer's day
A mother sings
A song of purple summer
Through the heart of everything

And heaven waits
So close it seems
To show her child the wonders
Of a world beyond her dreams

The earth will wave with corn
The day so white, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne

And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer

And so I wait
The swallow brings
A song of what's to follow
The glory of the spring

The fences sway
The porches swing
The clouds begin to thunder
Crickets wander, murmuring

The earth will wave with corn
The day so white, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne

And all shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer
All shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer

And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer

Listen to what's in the heart of a child
a song so big and one so small
soon you will hear where beauty lies
you'll hear and you'll recall
the sadness, the doubt, all the loss, the grief
will belong to some play from the past
as the child leads the way to a dream of belief
a time of hope to the last

I quite like these lyrics better!

The new ones work better in context, but as a song in and of itself, I appreciate the "nineties obtuse" of the original.

I definitely prefer the revised lyrics.

The last line is "A time of hope through the land."

-just sang this at a performance-

This comes first--not last.

Listen to what's in the heart of a child
A song so big in one so small
Soon you will hear where beauty lies
You'll hear and you'll recall
The sadness the doubt, all the loss, the grief
Will belong to some play from the past
As the child leads the way to a dream of belief
A time of hope through the land

And then it goes into:

A summer's day, a mother sings....

and all the rest.

the reason the lyrics are different on the soundtrack is because the soundtrack was recorded in-between off-broadway and broadway. after the show moved to broadway, there were some changes in the lyrics. you'll also notice that the order of the songs is different on the soundtrack. that's because after the show moved to broadway, "the guilty ones" was moved ahead of "don't do sadness/blue wind." i think it's because "the guilty ones" comes right after intermission and basically wraps up everything that happens in the first act.

and also, it's "the days so wide, so warm," not "so white, so warm." and in the beginning, it's "a song so big in one so small," not "a song so big and one so small." minor mistakes =]

Glad to read such a nice piece of information.
This is exciting news.
what a great info, thanks.

That's a nice reflection on the use of color imagery in the lyrics. Blue is mentioned a lot as well. I love the abstract, poetic quality of the lyrics in Spring Awakening. I've yet to see/hear another show that does that in such a moving way.

also, they replaced the song "there once was a pirate" with the song "the guilty ones." since the pirate song was taken out, a lot of the ship/pirate imagery used in a lot of the songs (specifically "touch me") no longer made sense, so they chagned the lyrics.

Never knew that! Thanks.

I prefer the original versions of Purple Summer and Touch Me, but to each their own! ;) But I do like the interlude right before Purple Summer that is not on the recording.

I almost went to Billy Elliot instead, but I'm so glad I decided on Next to Normal! Definitely the best original musical since Rent (with Spring Awakening being considered an adaptation). The entire cast is amazing and the music is phenomenal. I'm rooting for it hard at the Tony's.
