Since when did sex and violence equal character development?

Had you actually read what I said, you would not be asking why removing major themes and character motivations hampers character development.

David none of that changes the fact that I still find it mind numbing and dull.

I know that's not the most enlightened of responses but I still stand by my statement that South Pacific is a dull, plodding show and it all revolves on Nellie and Emile being bland characters.

Love Cable, Liat, Bloody Mary and the Seabees...but Nellie and Emile...just kill the show for me.

Well I agree "You don't know" is a bit of 'You just don't understand', but it is built up after we have some kind of insight of what she might experience though "I miss the mountains", and "My Psychopharmacologist and I".

But neither of those songs succeed in providing any real insight into the character's mind. The lyrics are too generic and distancing.

Quote:
Because the show is not an exposition on mental illness, I don't think it has to capture every intricate detail of her illness though. I mean, the point of N2N is how it affects her family and they affect her etc.

By intricacy, I meant EMOTIONAL intricacy. The writers just don't know how to capture the complexities of family dynamics through song.

So I think the emotions that 'register'' in songs like "I've been", 'light" etc.. are genuine.

I'm not saying that a great actor (such as Alice Ripley) couldn't make a certain emotion register onstage. But it was because of what the actor added on, not what was in the script itself. When I listened to the cast album, I was entranced. When I read through the script, it was ridiculous.

I really dislike Billy Elliot, especially the music. Elton John's score is a big letdown.
Another musical that I have no idea why it's so popular is Oklahoma!
Moves faaaar too slow.

I can't stand Wicked and all the Disney films save for The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Also, anything by Starkid Productions, if you can call that crap "musicals".
