This is my fist time auditioning for this musical. I have no idea what character to audition for or what song to sing or basically anything about this musical. I decided to audition for something outside of my zone. My past roles have been:

Sweeney Todd: Sweeney Todd

Merrily We Roll Along: Charlie Kringas

Bye Bye Birdie: Mr.Macafee.

Company: Paul

and some other non important ones, I want to try something different. Song ideas and character ideas are helpful.

So I'm assuming that by your past roles, you're a baritone. In terms of characters, you could play Horton (depending on how you look, considering that he's supposed to be a bit...larger). You could also look at General Schmitz (big character role, and somewhat of a speak-singing role), Mr. Mayor (depending on how high your range goes), or Yertle the Turtle (depending on how low your range goes). You could also play the middle Wickersham brother (he's the baritone/tenor II in the Wickersham trio). Once you decide which part you want to go for, we can go from there!

I'll try for Horton or Mayor.

Horton and Mr. Mayor are both two nurturing characters. I'd think about songs like "Grow For Me" from LSOH and "Father's Day" from Children of Eden.

I've been thinking. I'm known for doing small funny roles. Do Horton or Mayor get any fun songs? Also, who sings more?

Horton's probably the lead of the show, if you had to pick one. Nice (or unusual, depending on how it affects you) thing about Seussical is that there are a lot of low male parts. Horton's not so high, but it does SIT high on the bass staff.

Yertle and Grinch are both Bass/Bass-Baritone parts (often a double-role). Neither is huge, but it's a pretty nice combination. Schmitz is a mid-to-large role that's good for a low-mid Baritone.

Mr. Mayor's a solid baritone part. I'm not terribly keen on his songs, but what do I know.

I'd say that they could be in somewhat fun numbers, but I don't think any of their big numbers are "fun." If you want that, I'd try for the Cat, General Schmitz, or one of the Wickersham Bros. Good luck and let us know what happens!

Today were the auditions. I used The Brain from Young Frankenstien. I think it went well. I won't find out for a while.
