Post Songs For a New World - Audition
I am auditioning for Songs for a New World in september and need some help picking out an audition song that shows I can belt, and have range. My original choice was "on my way" from Violet, but the sheet music is not available to the public. Then I wanted to do A New Life from Jekyll, but this company just did that show last year, and I would be worried they would associate the song with the woman who sang it last year. Now I am thinking maybe

The Wizard and I - Wicked
What Good would the moon be
Spark of Creation - Children of Eden
What can you Lose - Dick Tracy
some song from aida, but not sure which

Any ideas? would love the help!

Mezzo/soprano trained in belt and lyrical
Former roles: Evita, Lilli (KMK), Caiaphus (JCS),
range: low E - High Bb

I feel like "Spark of Creation" is closest to the style of JRB of all those songs. And it fits SFANW thematically.

And "On My Way" is a group number, right?? Don't wanna;' do that.

Your best bet would be to sing a Jason Robert Brown song. But if you don't have you in your repertoire, I wouldnt bother with learning one. Unless you had a ton of time to prepare.

Well, I have a month to prepare, and know a few of his songs, but the piano music for so many of them is really challenging, and I would hate to compromise a good audition on the chance that the pianist may not be able to read it well, or me have trouble following him. sutton foster does a great single version of on my way on youtube. I think i'm leading towards sark of creation, its just narrowing it down to 16 bars now.

If the pianist can't play Brown's music at an audition for one of his shows... maybe you shouldn't audition because to me that's a sign that the theatre isn't very good and that the show won't be good. I'm pretty sure they'd hire a pianist that can sight read Brown's accompaniment.

you just never know. sometimes the pianist at the auditions are not the same that will be playing the show. I've seen that many times.

anyone have any thoughts on the parade song?

I'd go with the JRB song, because it's closest to the style of the show. "Fine, Fine Line" is a good alternative, because it has that same pop ballad quality as some of the songs in SFANW. But your best bet is to use a JRB song, which normally is not preferred at auditions, but in this case, it would work well.
