When auditioning for a"rock opera", such as Rent, don't sing a song from a generic musical, such as Phantom. (You shouldn't sing something from "Phantom", anyway, but that was just an example.

Idea- Sing something you know and are familiar with that isn't from another musical, unless the CD's specifically ask for that.

Good idea And FYI/random fact, Idina used Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About" as an audition song for "Rent".

Um...I feel really stupid asking this ( ), but what's Something to Talk About? I've never heard of it, 'til now. I also know she sang a song from "Aida" when she auditioned for "Wicked."

It's a bluesy pop song sung by Bonnie Raitt; which I think was also used in the movie by the same name starring Julia Roberts. I think Bonnie Raitt may have even won some awards for the song (Grammy/American Music Awards) though I can't remember exactly. It's played pretty often on hit radio stations, so I'm sure you've heard it at least once. Anyway, I just thought it was a good example to give of a unique/perhaps risky song choice to audition with for a rock musical. Although obviously this may not work for everyone!

That's so funny about Idina singing a song from Aida for a Wicked audition, because she played Amneris in Aida at one point I think.

no wonder i didn't get into interlochen
i sang Shy from Once Upon A Mattress for my audition video

never sing RENT, Wicked, Phantom, Les Mis
or, if its a serious musical, don't sing something from Annie or You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Childrens musicals don't really cut it
I have an audition coming up for the Threepenny opera
i was considering songs
comment on them please
-Wherever He Ain't (Mack and Mabel)
-I see A River (Urinetown)
-Stars and the Moon (Songs for a new World)
-Before the Parade (Hello Dolly....i think?)
-At the Ballet (A Chorus Line)
-Nothing (A Chorus Line)
-something from Chess/Sweeney Todd?

You're getting to see Wicked in London? Lucky! Isn't Idina still Elphie over there? If so, double Lucky! I really want to see her in something other than Rent, the movie.

From what I've gathered, I'd scratch Sweeney Todd off as it's a Sondheim thing (they're generally hard for accompanists) and I've read it's better to do charactery songs rather than story telling so I'd take off "Nothing" as well.

If you're auditioning for anything I'm on the panel for don't sing Electricity from Billy Elliot
Admittedly, most of my panel experience is with kids, but everyone thinks they can sing this...they can't

Its prolly not a good idea to sing anything you couldn't if you had a cold - if nerves set in while you're auditioning, its likely your breathing will go so any complicated notes are more likely to be lost or screwed up. It's the hardest thing to find a song that 1 - shows off your voice, 2 - hasn't been sung by everybody for the last 5 years, 3 - you could do in your sleep. If anyone works out a way, let me know! #-o

O yeah, make sure any sheet music you take is in your key - the pianist may be able to transpose it, but give em a break! :D
