From what I've seen, most directors don't like it when you sing Sondheim at all unless it's flawless- which is no small feat.

If you're auditioning for anything, don't use songs by JRB, Guettel, Lippa, Sondheim (unless they specifically ask you to) because it is close to IMPOSSIBLE for the pianist to read and it will ruin your audition experience!

You can find other things that fit well in your voice that are easier for the pianist to play...The pianist is part of your audition...DON'T FORGET THAT!

Well said. Never forget that the pianist is your team member and wants to do well too.

I have an audition for a school coming up, can someone help me choose an audition song? I have one that I think might be good, but I feel like the subject matter might be inappropriate for a high school audition.

^ Why not make a separate thread in this forum and give us some details? Is this an audition for a high school production, or is this an audition to attend a different school for music? What's your voice type, etc.? Make a new thread and I'll be sure to help you there :)

I'm looking for new material and I've hit a roadblock. Are there songs that used to be overdone four or five years ago that are no longer considered overdone?

I also have a voice coach who says to just sing whatever makes you sound good, overdone or not (and he has a few students on Broadway at the moment, including leads). He's even recommended I sing something from my Rent or Wicked rep; but reading this thread makes me feel like I'll be counted out the moment I open my mouth.

Not saying that Rent and Wicked have necessarily dropped off the list, but what known shows/songs are just not heard that often anymore?

If you're auditioning for a talent show, don't sing a song which you don't know how to sing!!!

Well, it's just easy to screw up. I've been using "My Friends" from Sweeney Todd for a couple years now, to very good effect. It's not a particularly challenging song for the accompanist, and it shows off my voice well.

As a bonus, when I went in to audition for Sweeney this week, I didn't really have to worry about what song from the show to choose, and guess what's in the callback packet for tonight that I don't need to spend any time brushing up?

If you're auditioning and the accompanist isn't a genius sight-reader, don't sing JRB. Or Sondheim.

If you're auditioning for Phantom, don't sing 'I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz (a lovely, but clueless dude at some recent auditions I was at).

If you're auditioning for any musical and you're over the age of 12, don't sing anything Disney. Unless you're going to sing Hellfire and you've got a killer baritone voice. Also, don't sing anything too offensive.

Would "All About Ruprecht" from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels be considered too offensive?
