Post i came here for help and now im more nervous!
I am auditioning for Thoroughly Modern Millie tomorrow. I have read up on the characters and the show style and I am confused as to what to do. I am a soprano (to high C) and a VERY strong tap dancer. So I would love to be Millie but even though i have a pretty good low range as well I am not really a belter. I would be very thrilled to get Dorothy Brown as well. Really at this point since I didn't get a call back in the last show I was cast in with the group I would be happy just getting a call back...but i digress.

So I've read all the stickies on here so as not to ask another annoying repeated question, but while working with my voice instructor he really thinks Till There was You is in the best part of my range to show of my voice. So now I am freaking out that its the only song I've really prepared well and not only is it not in the style of the show, its also suggested to be on the overdone list!

So if anyone can tell me that I won't be completely overlooked or just tossed in with the tap dancing secretaries with that song (i know you have to assume i do a great job with it which you can't know from this post..but i feel strong on it) that would be a GREAT help for my nerves! Thanks!

That's so funny about Idina singing a song from Aida for a Wicked audition, because she played Amneris in Aida at one point I think.

Wait, how come I didn't hear about this? I wuld have never guessed she would have done a song like that, but everyone has their preferences.

If you are trying out for anything, do not sing the song that your choir just did as the Spring Concert Finale. Other people will be doing it.

Anyone who wants advise on auditioning should buy How to Audition for the Musical Theatre; A Step-By-Step Guide to Effective Preparation by Donald Oliver. It has all sort of useful information in it and a long list of songs you should never sing at an audition.

That does sound like a good idea. Do you know any of the ones that are listed?

If you're auditioning for Glee, don't sing "DRoMP" or "Lean On Me." 75% of your fellow auditioners have already recorded their versions. Be a standout.

In my middle school's production of High School Musical, the teacher actually told us to audition with a song from the show. I'm pretty sure that her reasoning was that everyone had seen it.

If you're Auditioning for an Arts High School Musical Theatre program, don't sing Lady Gaga or something. They want you to sing some ACTUAL theatre, not some freak show wearing too much make up talking about suggestive topics in a lot of her songs.

My friend told me the first part, not the second part.

If you're auditioning for Little Shop of Horrors, don't sing Green Finch and Linnet Bird.

I don't even know how that could be considered a good choice in any way.

If you're auditioning for a classic musical, don't sing a modern/pop song, and vice versa.

For example, if you're auditioning for South Pacific, don't sing "Brand New You" from 13 or "Bop to the Top" from HSM.

If you're auditioning for HSM, don't sing "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific or "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables.

Actually, don't sing Les Mis unless you're good at it and the song is not too big for you, and it's not overdone (which it probably is).
