Post Help choosing a song for CATS auditions?
I am going to be auditioning for the role of "Rumpleteazer" in CATS the musical next week, and I am completely stumped on what to sing in my audition. I am a sixteen year old soprano and I have the acrobatics covered (I do circus training and gymnastics...) I just need a good song to sing. I know all the worlds to most showtunes, but is that a really a good way to go? I was reading on here and I don't think that showtunes would be the best idea, since the people have probably heard them all a zillion times, but I just wanted to know what you guys think I could sing... I'm pretty much open to everything.

Thanks!

I dont know if Glindas singing range fits you but how about the song Popular from Wicked? Acting wise you have the chance to be outacting and owning the stage much like rumple does. The only thing against popular is that its probebly a very popular song to sing in auditions.

Ill keep my fingers crossed that you get her, rumple is a very funny character to see on the stage, and I have a photo off me with the german tour version off her^^

I don't want to go down the Wicked path, as I know those songs are possibly so overdone and I don't want to give the judges any excuse to stop me early, and I don't want to bore them :|

When I auditioned and wanted Rumpleteazer, I did "Shy" from Once Upon A Mattress...it got me the callback! :)

Definitely sing a musical theatre song; it's just not usually a good idea to sing from another genre unless it's specified as an option on the audition notice (is it specified?). It's wise to steer clear of overdone songs (like Wicked, don't touch Wicked), I agree, but there are a derth of songs traditionally sung by perky young girls (a la Rumpleteazer), you just might have to hunt them down. :)

Look at shows with similar characters - Once Upon a Matress, Hairspray, Spelling Bee, Avenue Q, Seussical, etc. all of those have potential song-choices. Without hearing your voice, it's hard to recommend specifically. What kind of stuff have you sung before?
