Post subject:  Own work or well known show

I have written my own musical/musical revue. It was written with the intention of being performed at my high school as the biannual production. It was dropped due to unforeseen circumstances in the department. I am now looking at workshoping it with out the schools backing and resources.
This is my question:
Should I do it without the resources or take on a well known straight play?
The purpose of it all was for more to get some experience in directing. I have no skills in vocal training and choreography but have people can do it but I would have to beg.
I was looking at a play like a dolls house or 139 steps.
What are your thoughts and opinions?
