Post Good musical for first-time director
I have the opportunity to direct my first show and I'd like it to be a musical. At this point I'm thinking of either Once Upon a Mattress or Big River (or if all else fails, I'll direct a revue), but I'm open to suggestions. What would be a good musical for a first-time director?

What is the target audience?
What is the venue - school?
What kind of talent pool do you have to draw from for a cast?
What kind of budget do you have for sets/props/costumes?

Once we have that kind of info recommendations are easier.

What is the target audience? Pretty much anyone
What is the venue - school? College
What kind of talent pool do you have to draw from for a cast? We recently put on very successful productions of Jekyll and Hyde and Angels in America, so I think we're capable of anything.
What kind of budget do you have for sets/props/costumes? $4,000

Ok Apples, Here are my thoughts on the matter:

Once on a Mattress - the set budget can get pretty big if you aren't creative. Other than that it is a fun first show to direct. You will need a good character actor for the King since he has to mime most of the show. Other than that the roles are not too hard to pull off.

Big River - Sorry, I don't know too much about this show.

I like the following ideas:

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - It is a fun show to do and can be a real hoot. The audiences generally love it and it can be done on a budget. The actors really get a chance to get into character and have fun with the roles.

Damn Yankees - This can be fun to do for a college set. The budget is not too over the top.

West Side Story - Takes some fairly talented cast members to pull off properly. Set & costume budget is doable. Is generally well received by audiences.

Rent - I don't know how hard it is to get the rights to this show yet. The costumes and sets are minimal. It would appeal very well to a college crowd.

Crazy For You - I don't know if you have a good choreographer or if you can direct dance, but if you can this is a great show. The music is accessible and the sets/costumes are manageable.

Grease - I think this is overdone, but it is fairly easy to direct and the cast is in the right age range.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been buried lately. Good luck.

RENT has been done three times in my area in the last two years, so presumably it's very easy to get the rights.
