Post FLOWER DRUM SONG
So there is a new production of the revised version of Flower Drum Song playing in San Jose. Playbill has some pictures up. This one is my favourite:

While browsing through the pictures, I also remembered how much I like the song "Don't Marry Me". It's been a while since I listened to my OCR; I really do love a great deal of the songs from the show.

Still, the last time I watched the film, I felt distinctly uncomfortable about some of the stereotypical elements of the film as well as feeling that some of the narrative elements of the film in general were a bit shaky. Some of these are inherited from the show and some are contrived for the film. But with three versions of the show in existence - the original, the film and the revisal - I thought there might be some room for discussion around the Rodgers and Hammerstein show that didn't quite make the "Big 5".

Later days
David

I detested teh revised version. it cut Sammy Fong..the best written role in teh show..and reduced lInda, the other well developed role to almost nithing. they redistributed songs..changed Madam Liang and Wang Ta's role so they were almost unrecognizable. it was a f*cking mess. give me the OBC and the film any day.

It's "Revisical" I loved it. It strengthened the story a bit more; and also the stereotypes. At least those were new to laugh at!!! I was getting tired of the old ones in the film version. At least they were updated. Obama was there in the audence when we saw it, and boy, was he laughing hard at the stereotypical jokes!! Goes to show a lot of people laugh at stereotypes!!
