The original fim was a disaster..Gordon McRae was too likable as billy, SHirley Jones couldnt act... the whole suicide was cut..they screwed it up by opening with Billy already dead..all the deep guts of the hsow were cut out. and 4 songs were missing.

easily the worst screen version of a R&H play.

Why the heck would they do a remake?! I thought the original film was fine.

Post What FILM VERSION??
Uhmmm, Duchess, where did ya get the idea that the CAROUSEL remake will be out next year? They HAVEN'T EVEN started shooting it, let alone cast the other parts. With the worldwide credit crunch, they may NOT even get financing for it at all. And in the meantime, Hugh Jackman's going to be VERY LOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNGGG in the tooth to play a young Billy.

NINE will be the big musical film for 200-NINE!!

they should bring a revival to the stage...then Hugh Jackman's age won't matter as much...but they could do what they did in Benjamin Button with the Makeup I guess. I'm good as lonmg as they get real dancers and keep to the original script which is beautiful!

They ALREADY DID a revival a few years ago -- I forget whether it was a Trevor Nunn version. And Jackman MIGHT NOT WANT to get tied up for many months on the same show.

The economics AREN'T the same.

Why not?

I'm just asking...I've never seen it or any videos of her in it. But I know that she got alot of acclaim for her turn as Carrie.

first off..carrie shouldnt be african american.. mr. snow is a pompous bigot.he'd never marry her.

2ndly..she sang all of carrie's song inncorrectly. they arent aria show pieces carrie is comic relief. she isnt the star of the show. she inncorectly shifted the balance of that production.

MacDonald as Julie? Maybe as Julie LaVerne in SHOW BOAT...but not Julie Jordan. And I say that not only racially but MacDonald looks too tough a character to be pushed around by Billy. To me, MacDonald just would NOT be believable as Julie. SHe was great as Melissande in that 110 I THE SHADE revival.

And of course, why would a white barker (Billy) fall for an Afro-American woman? Even today, that combination is rare compared to the other way around.

someone like billy doesnt give a shit about what apears to be correct. in 1890s new england mr. snow would. its not hard to see.

Hmmm...it's just NOT believable casting for me. And precisely, Billy being an unschooled guy would certainly stick to his 'own kind.' Then his being 'supported' by Mrs. Mullins also would throw the show off-balance. But even as Carrie, she was jarring. I doubt that the R&H Org would sanction such a departure from tradition.
