Post The Carousel "Accent"...
Blech! It's a toughie!

It's basically a made-up accent, from what I've been told. It's funny because the cast all does it in different ways. Most of them sound pseudo-Southern.

I wish we had a freakin' dialect coach because this is going to bother me SO MUCH!

I'm playing Julie and honestly, I want to tone it down a bit, so I have. I'm basically using a more "relaxed" grammar and that seems to be fine. I've got a hint of the accent...

Anyway...I'm just trying to say it's a pain in the butt and I really want to know if there are any places I should look at to hear the accent done correctly and not too over-the-top.

Okay...I'm not feeling so bad about it.

After playing the cast album to death (1994 Revival...GOD LOVE AUDRA!)...Carrie and Julie both sound like they have completely different accents. They both say "roof" differently...and a few other things!

LOL!

I still love Audra, so don't make me kick your butt! LOL!

Weird that the London cast would have better accents. I wouldn't think that would be the case...

Have you played Julie before, Salome?

Perhaps you should watch some Stephen King movies. Everything he writes is usually set in rural Maine or New England, so you'll get a smattering of accents there to use as you see fit.

However, if you're playing Jigger or singing Blow High, Blow Low, it is perfectly acceptible to use a pirate voice, as Blow High is the national anthem of piracy. Or so says my school's theater department.

Well, obviously I'm not playing Jigger...but wouldn't that be fun??? LOL!

And I'll start watching the Stephen King movies as well (for the accents)...but I'll probably scare myself silly and forget to take notes!...Thanks!

I'm also going to the NY Performing Arts Library next weekend to watch the 1994 revival of "Carousel". I heard they did something interesting with the opening scene...I'm curious to see their take on it...

What I wouldn't give to go there and see the one show I'm always kicking myself for having missed...

Maybe next time you're in the city, we'll schedule an appointment to see the archival video, but we have to convince them we're doing it for research! LOL!
