Post subject:  An unusual experience as an R&H listener

I would like to share my experience after having listened to the R&H musicals for some time. The unusual thing is that although R&H fans and theatre pundits praise Oklahoma and Carousel a lot, I've never felt really involved when listening to these two musicals on record, or when I see the film. I know my view may be biased, but I haven't seen any of these shows on stage. Singapore doesn't always witness any community theatre productions of these musicals. No doubt Oklahoma was a landmark show in setting the rule that the songs, story, costumes and choreography must be integrated into one, and no doubt Carousel dealt with serious themes in a musical (i.e. spousal violence). Of course these two shows have given us many unforgettable tunes like Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin', If I Loved You and You'll Never Walk Alone, but somehow or other I don't feel the scores stick in my head and linger in the memory for long.
I do tend to like SP, K&I and SOM the most out of the R&H canon. I feel a little more involved and I feel that in these later hits R&H were really coming into their own. What I feel is that I can better relate to the characters in these later R&H hits, and feel like the scores stick a little more in my head. I like the characters a little more (yes I know that Lindsay and Crouse drew up the characters in SOM) but on the whole I tend to enjoy these scores more as a result.

Sound of music is a disaster script wise..cardboard characters..and also a weak score.

South Pacific
Carousel
King and i

are the 3 strongest R&H shows.

Honestly, I wouldn't judge Carousel by watching the movie. The movie is crap compared to the show.

Post subject:  To steer the thread back on track

I think we've digressed from the intent of my original post. I wanted to share my point because I wondered if it's possible that some of you felt cold towards the earlier R&H shows. Surprise, surprise, within my family (although not many of my family members care for musicals and classical music that much), my aunt shares my feelings about Oklahoma and Carousel, in that she feels cols listening to these two shows despite some memorable and well-crafted songs. And I know that a good many R&H listeners in Singapore tend to feel like me, and share my love for K&I and especially SOM.

Here is my take on the R&H shows:

South Pacific is my favorite all around.
Carousel is wonderful but somewhat dated.
King and I is a great show, but I don't like it quite as well as Carousel or South Pacific.
Oklahoma! has a great score, but the book doesn't do much for me.
Sound of Music has a strong book (by Lindsay and Crouse) but a comparatively weak score.
