Post Lumiere's Hands
Hi! This is my first post...I'm very excited :D

My HS is doing Beauty this year and I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips/hints/ideas/etc. on how to construct Lumiere's hands, minding the fact that we are a high school and have to heed irksome little details like fire codes so real fire is probably out of the question lol.
Thank you so much!

Both times I saw it, it was a simple "fake torch" on a glove shaped like a candlestick.
Fake torch as in a piece of paper moving like a flame above a light and a fan.

Hope I helped! Good luck!

i was in a regional production of BatB and we also were not allowed to use real fire... so what our prop master did was use two fancy looking flowerpots and attached them bottem ends touching then painted them to look like candles. he then used the little mechanisms found in the halloween cauldrons that look like fire and put that in the top flowerpot and then wired it to have a switch so that the actor could turn on of off. he then made another one for the other hand.

i hope that helped and made since.

Ok I saw a picture of this Lumiere from Holland. This gorup did something I thought was simple and cute.

So they had typical foaming aroudn the Lumiere's wrists but his hand stuck ok a little. He wore white gloves. When it was time to have flames he simply opened his hands. The palms of the gloves were covered in red, orange and yellow sequins and pieces of shiny metalic paper. When the flames went out he simply made a fist and hid his hands.

I thought it was pretty original and inexpensive.

I think that if you want to go for inexpensive, electric candles could be used.

Or if you have money on your hands(ha ha!), there are online costume shops that you could rent them from.

Thanks everybody! This is all really helpful! I'm my school drama club's president so I was using my Christmas break to get a jump start on some of the trickier elements of the show...which I don't mind at all BatB is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!! :D
These ideas are great! Please keep 'em comin'!

i'm DC president too :) who are you playing in BatB?

when I did it at community theatre this summer we used fake torches as well..that's the way to go. I think we used styrafoam or cardboard or something but we used a lot ot orange/yellow paint to make it look cool. man those things were heavy.

other things you may want to start thinking about are Mrs.Potts costume and makeup/Hair for the Beast those take a lot of time and effort to not look campy. also Belle costumes because they are so specific. If there is a regional/community theatre by you that rents out costumes I'd suggest checking with them, MTI may be some help as well. They may even have Lumiere hands already made.

anyway good luck with the show. It's great fun.

I'm playing Belle! I'm so excited! It's my dream role :D :D
Yeah i talked to our director the other night and she did contact a theater that has some costumes. I'm not too terribly worried because our costume lady is PHENOMINAL (and a good math teacher to boot lol)!
Just the director said if we come across any ideas about the harder things in the show, to make a note of them and I didn't see any threads about Lumiere so I figured I'd make one myself lol!
Thank you all so much again!!!

Sorry to bump an old thread. Does anyone know of a costume or theatre company that does rent the actual butane torches for Lumiere's costume? The few companies that are popping up when I search don't have actual flame torches available. Does anyone have them to rent?
