I received mine last week, and have had an almost religious experience reading it. As far as I can tell, it's the definitive work on lyrics in musical theatre.

I LOVE IT.
From now on whenever I refer to "The Bible", I'm talking about this book.

I am waiting eagerly for my copy, which should arrive today, so I really hope it gets here tomorrow! The only problem is that when I get the book, my head will be nowhere else.

It is a marvellous book, all the more so for Sondheim's commentary on the craft of creating musical theatre. I'm dipping in and out of it as I have time and started a series of reflections on my blog, to which I'll add as I continue to make my way through the book.

It's a superb book, for its honesty as much as its detail on the subject of lyric writing. Whether you like Sondheim or not, this is one of the definitive books for musical theatre enthusiasts.

Here is a great clip of Sondheim promoting the book on The Colbert Report. Nothing profound, just a great bit of good humoured fun. Oh - and Sondheim revealed the name of the second volume: Look, I Made a Hat.

I loved this interview. I especially loved Colbert's new version of Send in the Clowns.
