Post The Proprietor
Question to those who have seen/done Assassins:

After the opening number, what does the Proprietor do throughout?

From what I understand, he sort of shows up here and there. What he does, exactly, depends on the production. In the original, he played the presidents who appeared onstage, was the voice from outside in the Booth sequence, and the voice of Artie Bremmer in the Oswald sequence.

He also plays as an announcer in "The Ballad of Czolgosz," as well as appearing behind Czolgosz to him him the handkerchief. In the revival he was a little expanded, doing the Reagan impression as Hinckley tries and fails to shoot him, taking over Fromme's lines. I've also seen videos where he helps Hinckley get his hands in the right position on the guitar. Also in the revival, they gave the Proprietor some of Byck's lines in "Another National Anthem"

I was under the impression that the Proprietor doubled up for one of the successful assassins (probably Guiteau if anybody...who else would it be?). I could be completely wrong though.

The only problem with that would be that the proprietor is in the same scene as every Assassin except Lee Harvey Oswald, who have been portrayed by the Ballader in some productions, like in the Original Broadway Cast.

That's true. I have no idea where I got that idea from!

The Balladeer didn't double as Oswald in the original. The revival, yes, the original, no.

But the Proprietor is pretty much always part of the small chorus, though, in The Ballad of Czolgosz, How I Saved Roosevelt, and the sometimes-cut Something Just Broke.

I never said that he doubled as Oswald in the Original Production, I said that he doubled as Oswald in the Original Broadway Production, which he did. I checked my libretto from the Original Broadway Cast Recording before posting it.

Oh whoops. I forgot that the original production was Off-Broadway.

No biggie, I almost did the same mistake myself, and had done it if I hadn't checked the libretto beforehand.

I played the Proprietor two months ago, actually. What a great role.

I also played the bartender, all of The police officers (Four of them), Multiple chorus members throughout, The Presidents, and James Earl Ray.

I had more stage time than some of the Assassins. And the Proprietor was an amazing role to play, my favorite of all of them.
