I think the question of preferring a singer to hear and an actress to watch comes down to what you want to gain from it. I never just listen to music for the sake of listening to it. If I listen to or watch a recording, it's because I want to experience a performance of the material. So I have no use whatsoever for a rendition of the song that sounds prettier but was never intended to be as fully consummated. If you enjoy just listening to something nice, I can see why Barbra's might be more palatable sometimes.

I watch this or Judi's version at least once a few months to remind myself what conveying the sub-text of a song really means.

For pure listening pleasure, however, there is this version by the incomparable Sarah Vaughan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgr9Y6LsnVs

In my opinion, sung texts are equal to spoken text - it's the communication of meaning that matters. Otherwise it's wallpaper, pretty wallpaper maybe, but wallpaper still.
