What a great poll, even if it really should be on the "Simply Sondheim" board.

Best overall show: Follies. It can't be topped.
Best score: Follies - the original version only, please.
Best book: Follies - most certainly only the 1971 original.

Best song (male): "The Road You Didn't Take".
Best song (female): "Losing My Mind".
Best song (non-solo): "A Weekend in the Country".

Best OBC recording: Company

Best character (male): Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd.
Best character (female): Phyllis in Follies.

Best performance by an actor in a Sondheim show: Len Cariou in Sweeney Todd and/or A Little Night Music.
Best performance by an actress in a Sondheim show: Angela Lansbury in Gypsy and/or Sweeney Todd.

And finally…

YOUR dream Sondheim role: For the next decade or so, Bobby in Company. After that, Ben from Follies.

Some of these, like the top 3 or the best OBC recording, are pretty much set in stone for me. Others, like the songs, are more subjective and change from time to time. I mean, how can one choose a best "non-solo"; every minute I can think of a new one ("A Little Priest", "Someone in a Tree", "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" - such brilliance) that I adore more than the previous one that popped into my head!

Best score: Sweeney Todd
Best book: A Little Night Music

Best song (male): "Finishing the Hat", Sunday in the Park with George
Best song (female): "Losing My Mind", Follies
Best song (non-solo): "Someone in a Tree", Pacific Overtures, obviously.

Best OBC recording: Eergh I can't decide. I find the OBCs to Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, and Pacific Overtures the best listening experiences.

Best character (male): Bobby, Company.
Best character (female): Fosca, Passion.

Best performance by an actor in a Sondheim show: Tie in my book: Victor Garber in Assassins and Len Cariou in Sweeney Todd
Best performance by an actress in a Sondheim show: Tie in my book: Donna Murphy in Passion, Joanna Gleason in Into the Woods, and Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd

And finally…

YOUR dream Sondheim role: Which one? :P I've wanted to be Pseudolus (Forum) for ages, but I'd love to play Bobby (once I'm older), Toby, or any character in a white production of Pacific Overtures. :P

I recently bought a DVD of Gypsy 1962. Of course, Sondheim penned the lyrics.
