Post Rank Sondheim's Scores from Best to Worst
Rank 'em with the best at the top.

The numbers within brackets are based on the overall quality of the show in general.

1. Sweeney Todd [1]
2. A Little Night Music [2]
3. Follies [3]
4. Pacific Overtures [7]
5. Sunday in the Park with George [5]
6. Into the Woods [8]
7. Merrily We Roll Along [10]
8. Anyone Can Whistle [9]
9. Assassins [6]
10. Company [4]
11. The Frogs [12]
12. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum [11]
13. Saturday Night [13]
14. Bounce [15]
15. Passion [14]

Truthfully, I think that almost all of Sondheim's scores are brilliant and I don't necessarily think that most of the ones near the bottom are bad, just not as brilliant as the ones at the top.

Post Sondheim Scores
Ranking the shows in terms of their scores is a little different from ranking them as shows overall. So I've ranked according to score, with what the placing would be for the show overall in brackets after each title. The ranking per show is, in this list, a more subjective take on the shows than on the scores. For example, if I was ranking the shows as objectively as the scores, Assassins wouldn't rank so high up. I'm not going to rank Road Show as I don't feel I know it well enough to place it within a list like this.

1. Follies [1]
2. Sweeney Todd [3]
3. Passion [5]
4. Sunday In The Park With George [7]
5. Company [2]
6. Merrily We Roll Along [8]
7. A Little Night Music [6]
8. Assassins [4]
9. Pacific Overtures [10]
10. Into The Woods [9]
11. Anyone Can Whistle [11]
12. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum [12]
13. Saturday Night [12]
14. The Frogs [13]

That's it then... for now...

Rating of scores, () are rating of book, [] are rating of show as a whole:

1. Pacific Overtures (10) [9]
2. Sunday in the Park With George (6) [7]
3. Sweeney Todd (5) [2]
4. A Little Night Music (3) [5]
5. Follies (4) [3]
6. Company (1) [1]
7. Anyone Can Whistle (9) [10]
8. Assassins (2) [4]
9. Into the Woods (8) [6]
10. Saturday Night (11) [12]
11. Passion (7) [8]
12. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (12) [11]
13. The Frogs (13) [13]
14. Bounce (14) [14]

As posted above, a score doesn't need to represent the quality of the show as a whole.

It saddens me that A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is so low on everyone's lists...I think it's fabulous. Oh, and I forgot to list Merrily the first time around...gnaygh!

Company
Follies
Sweeney Todd
A Little Night Music
Pacific Overtures
Sunday in the Park With George
Into the Woods
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Merrily We Roll Along
Assassins
Passion
Anyone Can Whistle
The Frogs
Saturday Night
Bounce

This is my list of best to worst, score-wise. Although I must admit I've never listened to very much of Bounce or Saturday Night...

Oh, I think it's fabulous too. I just think that a lot of Sondheim's other shows happen to be more fabulous. I mean, he was only in his 20s when he wrote the show.

The consensus that Sweeney Todd is Sondheim's masterpiece is seen here at MdN as well. Does anyone have any thoughts? I did a ctrl+f scan and the show is consistently rated at the very top of everyone's lists.

As posted above, a score doesn't need to represent the quality of the show as a whole.

It is funny to see how much my taste has changed and my opinions altered with me getting to know the shows better.

1. Passion
- This show has the best integrated score of the bunch. The show as a whole is not at the top, but the way the score flows with the show is marvelous!
2. Sweeney Todd
- For the same reason as Passion, the score is so well integrated to the show, but I won't rank it as high as Passion since Sweeney Todd is almost sung-through, making it the task easier, although the result is as good as with Passion.
3. Pacific Overtures
- It is very strong! How Sondheim manages to keep the texture the same throughout is genius! I just don't think it flows as well with the book as Passion and Sweeney Todd.

I don't intend to rate or discuss the other scores right now. I still haven't gotten into Follies, I have read both the revised version and the original version. I have the complete scores of both, but I don't get it. I may be too young or something, but it doesn't strike me the same way his other shows do.

Post Re: Rank Sondheim's Scores from Best to Worst
I'm really amazed Sondheim doesn't get done more in Community Theatre, given the buzz it produces. A well-known and respected area CT director is doing ITW this summer, and not only are people coming out of the woodwork to audition (myself included) but I've been getting barraged by friends with requests to help choose and prepare audition songs for this.

And as I was reflecting on this this morning, I was thinking "the last time people around here were so ginned up over a CT show was last year... for Sweeney Todd."
