Post Sondheim and Parade
Well, the story is that Hal Prince initially asked Sondheim to do the score for Parade, but he turned it down.

Why did he turn it down? I heard one person say it was because he thought it was too depressing, but... that's not particularly congruent, seeing as he's the guy who did Follies and Into the Woods.

Also, how do you think it would be different than Jason Robert Brown's version? Is it better that Brown did the score?

Brown was the perfect man to do the score to Uhry's script. Sondheim knew it and recommended him.

I cant see Parade as a Sondheim show.

I think if Sondheim HAD done the show it would be much smaller...just speculation of course.

I would have to agree. Brown Was the best for the job and I dont think that Sondheim's ... Style I guess would be the proper word. Would have worked ..

But then Again what do I know :D

The story goes that Hal asked Sondheim to do the score. Prince, Uhry and Sondheim worked on it for six months and Sondheim then said he couldn't do it after coming off the depressing Passion. He wanted to do something lighter. So they got Jason Robert Brown, who had worked with Hal's daughter, Daisy. Brown, I think, did a fabulous job. Sondheim probably would have done a fabulous job too, but I digress.
